The next installment in our 25 Days of Christmas series is Nicholas. Nicholas is a Greek name meaning "people of victory." He is currently ranked at #42, but peaked in the mid-nineties at #6. He is considered a classic by many, Nicholas has been in the top 200 ever since the 1880s (when they started taking name data.)
Nicholas has many great nicknames, ranging from the classic Cole, Colin, Nick, or Nicky, to the on-trend Nico. Some famous Nicholas' include Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers, and Nicolas Sparks, the author.
Nicholas is great for a baby born any month of the year. His ties to "Saint Nick" could help make a subtle themed sib set. Nicholas is a well-regarded classic, he would make a great choice for a holiday baby boy.

Full Names for Nick
![]() |
Benicio- Benicio may be pronounced (ben-EE-see-oh), but that doesn't mean you can't use Nick as a nickname. He gives Nick some Latin flavor.
Dominic- Dominic is as popular as ever, and arguably the most trendy name on this list. He sits at #69, down a spot from 2013's #68. Mario Lopez's son Dominic goes by Nico, but Nick works just as well.
Finnick- Finnick is an English name made popular by the book and movie series The Hunger Games. Hardcore fans of the books are a little young to be having chidren, but could we see a rise in Finnicks in the near future?
Monico- Rarely does it happen that a male name is derived from a female name. But so it is with Monico. He's the male version of Monica, a '70s staple. Monico is undoubtedly more modern than his female counterpart, and Nick (or the simpler Nic) makes a wonderful nickname.
Nicasio- Nicasio is a Spanish form of Nicholas, with a powerful meaning--"victory." He's an exotic yet wearable option for an American baby.
Nicholas- You can never go wrong with a classic.
Nichols- Nichols (and alternate spelling Nicholes) are almost unheard of as first names in the United States, but are fairly common surnames. Unlike Nicole, the emphasis is put on the first syllable.
Nicholson- Nicholson is quite a name, and most people would assume you named your son after Jack. But if you call him Nick, this is not a very significant problem.
Nicolai- Nicolai, while only ranking at #2020, is at his highest popularity ever in the United States. He's very dashing, and an easy alternative to Nicholas.
Nicolo- Nicolo is Italy's answer to Nicholas, and lends himself more to Nico rather than Nick. Nick is still a more than usable nickname though.
Nikhil- This Sanskrit name had a brief run in the U.S. top 1000, charting from 1997 to 2009. At his peak he was #818. Nihkil is a lovely choice for Indian-Americans who like Nick (or Nik).
Yannick- I first came across Yannick when I was researching for this post, and ever since then, I can't stop thinking about him. He makes a truly unique way to get to Nick.

Celebrity Baby Name Predictions: Volume 29
How important to you is sibset cohesion? Many celebrity
sibsets in this month’s group are remarkably harmonized—Nikki Sixx’s children
all have edgy names perfect for the sons and daughters of a punk rocker.
Courtney and Mario Lopez gave each of their kids very Italian names, and Jessa and
Ben Seewald have sons with names inspired by notable members of their faith.
Other stars have coordinating sibsets—the names
go together, but they may be a bit different in style or usage. Chelsea Clinton’s
Charlotte and Aidan are an example of this, as are Sara Haines’s Alec and Sandra.
Each are adding a third child to their family this year, and it will be exciting
to see how their names add to the sibsets. I’ve made my predictions for their
choices below—let me know how yours compare!
Chelsea
Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky
Gender: unknown
Siblings: Charlotte,
Aidan
Chelsea Clinton and
her husband Marc Mezvinsky chose popular names for their two children, but with
slightly different styles. Charlotte is a modern classic—not so long ago
considered an old-lady name, but recently given the royal seal of approval.
Aidan, although with Irish roots, feels very American, thanks to the -ayden
names defining the decade in US baby name trends. It’s not uncommon for parents
to have different taste in names for each gender, but I’m curious if this
sibset will bend more towards recent favorites or familiar revivals.
Girl: Eleanor, Elizabeth, Eva, Grace, Josephine, Lillian, Lucy, Nora, Olivia, Sadie
Girl: Eleanor, Elizabeth, Eva, Grace, Josephine, Lillian, Lucy, Nora, Olivia, Sadie
Boy: Benjamin, Eli, Henry, James, Liam, Nathan, Nicholas,
Owen, Samuel, Theo
Courtney
and Mario Lopez
Gender: unknown
Siblings: Gia
Francesca, Dominic Luciano
Courtney and Mario
Lopez have a love for accessible Italian choices—ones that have distinct
Italian flair, but don’t feel out of place on their American children. Considering
they picked names in this category for each of their children’s first and
middle names, the odds are high that baby number three will follow this pattern
as well.
Girl: Aria, Bianca, Camilla, Eliana, Emilia, Livia, Lucia, Luna, Milana, Serena
Girl: Aria, Bianca, Camilla, Eliana, Emilia, Livia, Lucia, Luna, Milana, Serena
Boy: Angelo,
Lorenzo, Luca, Marco, Matteo, Maximo, Romeo, Santino, Xavier
Courtney
and Nikki Sixx
Gender: unknown
Siblings: Gunner
Nicholas, Storm Brieann, Decker Nilsson, Frankie-Jean Mary (previous
relationships)
A large
age gap often leads to disparate name styles within a sibset, but I don’t think
that will be the case with Nikki Sixx’s children. His children all have what we
like to call Badass
Baby Names. With such a clear affinity for names with a radical image, I
expect baby number five will have one as well.
Girl: Avalon, Domino, Echo, Indigo, Lavender, Lux, Maven,
Phoenix, Revel, Seven
Boy: Axel,
Blade, Breaker, Crash, Diesel, Draven, Kicker, Onyx, Zenith, Zephyr
Jessa Duggar and Ben Seewald
Gender: unknown
Siblings: Spurgeon
Elliot and Henry Wilberforce
The Duggar family at
large is known for having themed sibsets and choosing names with religious
significance. Jessa and Ben in particular have picked names for their sons
drawn from historical figures in Christianity. We have every reason to expect
they will continue this theme for their third child—the question is, who will
they be inspired by?
Girl: Annie, Darby, Elizabeth, Evangeline, Lottie, Phoebe, Pink, Sunday, Taylor
Girl: Annie, Darby, Elizabeth, Evangeline, Lottie, Phoebe, Pink, Sunday, Taylor
Boy: Barton,
Beecher, Harris, Judson, Palmer, Pruitt, Simeon, Theodore, Wesley
*Update* Welcome, Ivy Jane!
*Update* Welcome, Ivy Jane!
Danielle Fishel and Jensen Karp
Gender: boy
Siblings: none
Danielle Fishel and Jensen Karp are expecting
their first child this summer—a boy! The pair has pets named Brunch and Bill,
but I don’t think they’ll go quite as quirky when choosing a name for their son.
I could see Danielle and Jensen using a familiar and stylish name that hits all
the right notes for a 2019 baby, much like the following:
Boy: Beckett, Grayson, Hudson, Ian, Julian, Logan, Maddox,
Otto, Wilder
Jazmyn Simon and Dulé Hill
Gender: boy
Siblings: Kennedy
(previous relationship)
When a mother’s last name works as a first name,
I love to see it used as such. Simon, which has a long history as a first name,
would be a great contender for the name of Jazmyn Simon and Dulé Hill’s son. If
they decide not to use that opportunity, I think Jazmyn and Dulé might go with
a trendier name for their little boy.
Boy: Easton, Flynn, Jameson, Jax, Landon, Milo, Nolan,
Rylan, Simon, Wyatt
*Update* He's here—Levi Dulé!
*Update* He's here—Levi Dulé!
Abby
Huntsman and Jeffrey Livingston
Gender: boy/girl
twins
Siblings: Isabel
Grace
Newscaster Abby Huntsman
and her husband Jeffrey gave their daughter the sweet and classic name Isabel
Grace. Now they’re expecting twins—a boy and a girl—and I would bet that their
new little ones will have similarly well-liked, charming names. For their
daughter, something feminine but substantial seems to be in order. For their
son, I could see them either going full-classic (like Arthur or William), or modern
(like Sawyer and Greyson).
Girl: Amara, Cecilia, Eden, Elena, Jane, Julia, Lila, Madeline, Natalie, Rosalie
Girl: Amara, Cecilia, Eden, Elena, Jane, Julia, Lila, Madeline, Natalie, Rosalie
Boy: Arthur,
Charlie, Elliot, Greyson, Jasper, Jude, Sawyer, Thomas, William
*Update* One out of two! Hello, Ruby Kate and William Jeffrey!
*Update* One out of two! Hello, Ruby Kate and William Jeffrey!
Sara Haines and Max Shifrin
Gender: unknown
Siblings: Alec
Richard and Sandra Grace
If you said that Alec and Sandra sound like a
sibset out of the 20th century, I wouldn’t blame you. Both names are
well past their peak, with Alec topping out in 1994, and Sandra reaching its
height in 1947. Sara and Max’s daughter was named after Sara’s mother Sandy,
but it still was a surprising pick, considering Sandra is considered quite
dated. I’m hoping Sara and Max revive another forgotten classic with their
third child’s name.
Girl: Amalia,
Diana, Erica, Frances, Judith, Julianna, June, Laura, Tessa, Virginia
Boy: Amos, Anton, Edward, Gregory, Marcus, Nathaniel, Philip,
Tobias, Walter

Ten Years Ago
Today, I was very interested to see what names were popular ten years ago, and how they were similar and different from our top ten today. Turns out, there were a few surprises. Here are the top ten boys and girls names from 2001.
Girls:
Emily
Madison
Hannah
Ashley
Alexis
Sarah
Samantha
Abigail
Elizabeth
Olivia
Boys:
Jacob
Michael
Matthew
Joshua
Christopher
Nicholas
Andrew
Joseph
Daniel
William
I was most surprised that our top two baby names for girls (Isabella and Sophia) did not make the top two. Isabella was 28 and Sophia was 37. Also, Ashley is number 27 today. That seems strange to me, because I consider it very 1990's and have never met an Ashley. For the boys, Nicholas has dropped to number 37. Very surprising was Aiden, who was at 86 in 2001, but a few years later, up to number 1. Jayden was 139. That concludes our Ten Years Ago post for this year.

Holiday Names
![]() |
Familiar
Bell- Do you have certain names where you hate one spelling but love the other one? For me, that's Bell. I really don't like Belle, but Bell makes me swoon.
Carol- Old fashioned; I would choose Caroline instead.
Holly- I think she's cuter as a nickname for Holiday.
Joy- Sweet, sweet, sweet. Perfect for the Holidays.
Natalie- She's not tied to Christmas anymore, so she makes for a subtle holiday name.
Nicholas- I'm not very fond of Nicholas, but that's probably because he peaked around the time I was born.
Fashionable
Eve- There's no better name for a girl born on December 24th.
Natalia- Kicks Natalie up a notch.
Neve- Gorgeous name meaning snow.
Pax- He means peace, which is a great meaning year-round.
Piper- This trendy girls name has her own line in the Twelve Days of Christmas song.
Winter- The most coveted season name.
Festive
Christmas- Might as well go big.
December- December is a unisex name, but if you use it on a girl, she can be called Ember.
Garland- One of my favorite G names for boys.
Holiday- Ooh, I adore Holiday. I would use her in a heartbeat.
Merry- I prefer Mary, but hey, Merry is better for a holiday baby.
Noel- Noel is very sophisticated, especially when pronounced (nole) on a boy.
Funky
North- Did Kim Kardashian ruin this name for everyone? Maybe stick her in the middle.
Plum- Plum is my other favorite of the list. She's just so cute!
Season- If you use her in the middle, don't make Holiday her first name.
Silver- A very festive color, seldom heard as a name.
Star- If Star is overkill, try Stella or Estelle.
Yule- Many people overlook Y names, but Yule is one of the better ones out there.
That's all for this week, thank you so much for reading. I will be off next week for the holidays. Check back on December 29th for a year in review post.

Celebrity Baby Name Predictions: Volume 8
![]() |
| Brent Blossom via Dribbble |
Christina and David Arquette
Gender: boy
Siblings: Coco (previous marriage), Charlie West
It's another boy for David Arquette and his wife Christina. They chose the friendly, likeable name Charlie West for thier first son, so I expect something along the same lines for his brother.
Boy: Alex, August, Eli, Henry, Jack, Liam, Milo, Oliver, Owen, Parker, Theo
*Update* Very close--Augustus Alexis!
Geri Halliwell and Christian Horner
Gender: unknown
Siblings: Bluebell Madonna (previous marriage)
Bluebell Madonna frequents the lists of Craziest Celebrity Baby Names. Will Geri Halliwell choose another wild name for baby number two? I hope so!
Girl: Blossom, Coco, Juniper, Moxie, Poppy, Romy, Tigerlily, Trixie, Velvet
Boy: Caspian, Huckleberry, Loyal, Peregrine, Phoenix, River, Valentine, Zeppelin
*Update--Bluebell's brother is Montague George Hector!
Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott
Gender: unknown
Siblings: Jack (previous marriage), Liam, Stella, Hattie, Finn
The McDermotts are often considered to have the best sibset in Hollywood. Stylistically the names work really well together, and they're all perfectly on trend. Whatever they choose for baby number five, I know it's going to be great.
Girl: Dolly, Elsie, Evie, Georgia, Ivy, Lucy, Minnie, Nellie, Ruthie, Tilly, Violet
Boy: Charlie, Dashiell, Everett, Felix, Gus, Jude, Milo, Otto, Rudy, Toby, Wyatt
*Update* It's a boy! Beau Dean McDermott
Rochelle and A.J. McLean
Gender: girl
Siblings: Ava Jaymes
Ava Jaymes is a sweet and sassy name that's full of spunk. I expect the McLeans to use a similar formula to name their second daughter as they did with Ava--a well-liked first name with a spunky middle.
Girl: Chloe, Grace, Hazel, Leah, Lila, Kira, Maddie, Mia, Olivia, Ruby, Sofia
*Update* Welcome Lyric Dean!
Lea Seydoux and Andre Meyer
Gender: unknown
Siblings: none
Lea Seydoux is having her first child, and I can't wait to hear what she names him or her. Lea is a French actress, so I have a feeling she'll choose a name that shares her European roots.
Girl: Amelie, Beatrice, Camille, Elinor, Emmeline, Madeleine, Silvie, Veronique
Boy: Adrien, Auguste, Charles, Henri, Julien, Luc, Quincy, Remy, Romain
*Update* A baby boy--George!
Sophie Hunter and Benedict Cumberbatch
Gender: unknown
Siblings: Christopher Carlton
Christopher Carlton is the appropriately British, classic name Sophie Hunter and Benedict Cumberbatch chose for their first child. I suspect his sibling will get an equally sophisticated and stylish name--maybe one of the ones below.
Girl: Abigail, Amelia, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Emma, Olivia, Philippa, Samantha, Victoria
Boy: Andrew, Jonathan, Matthew, Nicholas, Samuel, Sebastian, Timothy, William, Zachary
*Update* Another boy--Hal Auden!
Amber Tamblyn and David Cross
Gender: girl
Siblings: none
It's a girl for Amber Tamblyn and David Cross! They could go in any direction with her name, but I'm guessing we'll see something sweet, cute, and upbeat from this comedy couple.
Girl: Elsie, Frankie, Georgia, Gracie, Lola, Lulu, Phoebe, Poppy, Ruby, Stella, Susanna
*Update* Hello, Marlowe Alice!
Ciara and Russell Wilson
Gender: unknown
Siblings: Future Zahir (previous relationship)
Ciara's oldest son Future is named after his father. I wonder if this means a possible son will be called Russell, like his dad. For a daughter, I doubt Ciara is on the list, but maybe a fun musical or word name to match the boldness of Future.
Girl: Aurora, Bliss, Cadence, Eden, Emerald, Love, Sable, Sienna, Story, Xara
Boy: Ace, Austin, Carlton, Cassius, Chance, Justice, Maverick, Reign, Russell
*Update* I was right--baby girl is Sienna Princess!

Celebrity Baby Name Predictions: Volume 24
Names are
very revealing. They carry demographic information—names often give clues as to
one's approximate age, race, nationality, and gender. However, our names say
more about our parents than they do about us. A child's name can tell you a lot
about his or her parents' values.
For example, Jason Aldean and Brittany Kerr
named their oldest son Memphis Aldean Williams. Memphis indicates their deep
ties to the South—both as the birthplace of country music and of Jason and
Brittany. And Aldean, the middle name baby Memphis shares with his father, tell
us the couple values family, heritage, and tradition.
Brittany is now pregnant with their second
child, and I wonder if the same values will come across in this baby's name, or
if new ones will be revealed. Likewise, what will we learn about the stars who
have never named children before? Will Pippa Middleton use a family name for
her baby, or choose something unexpected? Will Kate Upton go the typical
supermodel route and pick a daring, bold baby name, or stick closer to her
Midwestern roots with a safer, subdued choice? I've made my predictions below,
but only time will tell.
Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma
Gender: girl
Siblings: Luca
Cruz (previous relationship)
It's going to be a girl for Hilary Duff and
Matthew Koma, and the pair has taken to calling her "Baby B" on
social media. So it appears as if she's going to have a B name, but which one?
There are plenty of great options, but I'm holding out for Bianca, because that
would be a nice addition to the sibset.
Girl: Bailey,
Bea, Bella, Bianca, Blair, Blythe, Bree, Briar, Brinley, Brynn
*Update* Baby girl B is Banks Violet!
*Update* Baby girl B is Banks Violet!
Pippa Middleton and James Matthews
Gender: unknown
Siblings: none
What will the Duchess of Cambridge's sister name
her baby? The bettors are saying Catherine or Michael. Michael seems like it's
a distinct possibility—it's the name of Pippa's father, as well as James's late
brother—but I'm not so sure that that the couple would name a daughter after
her aunt. My best guess is that they'll choose something with traditional
British class, but with some flair, as Pippa doesn't have the same restrictions
as her older sister.
Girl: Alice,
Amelia, Caroline, Clara, Eleanor, Josephine, Madeline, Rosamund
Boy: Bennett,
Edward, Frederick, Michael, Nicholas, Oliver, Peter, Thomas
Iva and Mike Colter
Gender: unknown
Siblings: Naiella
Mike Colter and his wife Iva gave their oldest
daughter the name Naiella. Naiella is an invented name, yet it sounds very
on-trend with names like Isabella, Gabriella, and Arabella floating around many
American playgrounds. If baby number two is another girl, I expect we'll see
another long and feminine name. For a boy, something cool and masculine.
Girl: Amina,
Aziza, Callista, Ciara, India, Kalea, Lelia, Liliana, Samaya, Viviana
Boy: Adrian,
Austen, Brody, Caden, Cairo, Dominic, Elijah, Julian, Mason, Roman
Elizabeth Smart and Matthew Gilmour
Gender: unknown
Siblings: Chloé,
James
Elizabeth Smart and her husband Matthew Gilmour
chose the enduring, modern staples Chloé and James for their first two
children. Now that they're expecting baby number three, I don't see why they
would stray from that tried and true pattern. While they're not for everybody,
there's a reason names like Chloé and James are so well-liked—they are
tailored, straightforward, and perennially stylish. It's likely that James and
Chloé's new brother or sister will have a name along those same lines.
Girl: Audrey,
Ella, Grace, Isabelle, Juliet, Lily, Lucy, Nora, Sophie, Violet
Boy: Charles,
Elias, Henry, Lucas, Oliver, Peter, Sebastian, Theodore, William
*Update* Hello, Olivia!
*Update* Hello, Olivia!
Colleen Ballinger and Erik Stocklin
Gender: unknown
Siblings: none
Colleen Ballinger is best known for her YouTube
alter-ego Miranda Sings, a quirky and offbeat character with oodles of
confidence. In real life, Colleen is much more subdued. In a 2015 video on her
personal channel, she claimed her first-born would be named Lily or Noah. Has
she deviated from those names in the past three years, or will she stick to her
guns?
Girl: Aria,
Aurora, Ella, Grace, Ivy, Lily, Olivia, Ruby, Sophia, Willow, Zoey
Boy: Ben,
Evan, Finn, Jack, Jude, Logan, Luke, Mason, Max, Noah, Owen
*Update* It's a boy—Flynn Timothy!
*Update* It's a boy—Flynn Timothy!
Addison Timlin and Jeremy Allen White
Gender: unknown
Siblings: none
Shameless actor
Jeremy Allen White and Addison Timlin are a young, fashionable couple. The
names that people in this demographic tend to choose are trendy up-and-comers,
rather than well-established, classic names. Using that logic, I've picked out
some names that I think Addison and Jeremy might like.
Girl: Cassia,
Clementine, Elodie, Esme, Harlow, Haven, Jayne, Piper, Romy
Boy: Asher,
Beckett, Callum, Charlie, Dashiell, Finn, Magnus, Sawyer, Wilder
*Update* It's a girl—Ezer Billie!
*Update* It's a girl—Ezer Billie!
Brittany Kerr and Jason Aldean
Gender: unknown
Siblings: Keeley,
Kendyl (previous relationship), Memphis Aldean
Jason Aldean is one of the top country stars, so
it was no surprise when he gave his son the very countrified
name Memphis back in 2017. Now that he and wife Brittany Kerr are welcoming
their second child together so soon after their first, I predict that we will
be hearing another name with some serious country vibes.
Girl: Annabelle,
Emmeline, Georgia, Gracen, Layne, Maisie, Nova, Willow
Boy: Beau,
Brooks, Dixon, Hayes, Jude, Knox, Macon, McCoy, Mercer, Nash
*Update* A girl—Navy Rome!
*Update* A girl—Navy Rome!
Kate Upton and Justin Verlander
Gender: unknown
Siblings: none
Supermodel Kate Upton and Houston Astros pitcher
Justin Verlander are expecting their first child later this year. In the
past, supermodels have
been known to choose incredibly fashionable (sometimes avant-garde) names—not
unlike the clothes they wear down the runway. Will Kate Upton follow suit with
her baby's name?
Girl: Bee,
Coco, Dove, Elara, Etta, Josie, Lilac, Maelle, Mirabelle, Vale, Zella
Boy: Ash,
Aubin, Bowden, Fielding, Hart, Jet, Lucan, Redford, Remy, True
