25 Days of Christmas: Poinsettia

Our Christmas baby name for today is Poinsettia. Poinsettia is a red Christmas flower. She is not ranked in the U.S. top 1000. Poinsettia is very out-there, she's defintely not for the conservative namer.

Poinsettia is a long name, but she has some nickname possibilites. Some of them include Pia, Settia, and Posy. This makes her all the more useable.

She's an interesting Christmas pick, best paired with a short middle name. You have to be brave to use this one. Check back tomorrow for our next Christmas name.

25 Days of Christmas: Nicholas

The next installment in our 25 Days of Christmas series is Nicholas. Nicholas is a Greek name meaning "people of victory." He is currently ranked at #42, but peaked in the mid-nineties at #6. He is considered a classic by many, Nicholas has been in the top 200 ever since the 1880s (when they started taking name data.)

Nicholas has many great nicknames, ranging from the classic Cole, Colin, Nick, or Nicky, to the on-trend Nico. Some famous Nicholas' include Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers, and Nicolas Sparks, the author.

Nicholas is great for a baby born any month of the year. His ties to "Saint Nick" could help make a subtle themed sib set. Nicholas is a well-regarded classic, he would make a great choice for a holiday baby boy.

25 Days of Christmas: Carol

Our Christmas name today is Carol. She is the English version of Charles, and means "free man." She peaked in the 1940s, ranking at #5. Today she would mostly be considered a "grandma name" but on a baby she might sound fresh again.

Carol has many full name options, including more modern ones like Caroline and Carolina, and also under-used choices like Carlotta, Carolyn, and Carline. She also works on her own, or would be great in the middle spot.

Carol is a great name that merges holiday and music. If you want a unexpected, old-fashioned name for your baby girl, Carol would make a lovely, simple choice.

25 Days of Christmas: Noel

Today's name is another unisex one- Noel. Noel is currently ranked at 455 in the U.S. for boys. His meaning is "Chrismas." The feminine Noelle is a little more popular, coming in at #357. The spelling Noel is much more popular for boys than it is girls.

Noel has been slowly decreasing in popularity ever since his peak in 1938. His lack of use is just one of the reasons he would make a great choice. Noel has no nicknames and would also be a very unexpected choice. He is very associated with Christmas, but if that's what you're going for, he should be at the top of the list for boys.

25 Days of Christmas: Merry

Our Christmas name of the day is Merry. Merry is an English girls' name meaning "light-hearted or happy." She is more commonly seen as a word in the phrase "Merry Christmas." While she is not currently ranked in the United States, Merry's peak was in the year 1954, where she reached #469.

If her similarity to Mary makes her seem too old-fashioned to you, you might consider Merry as a middle name. She would sound lovely and festive with many names, and can soften the sounds of harsher and more serious appellations.

Merry is a nice choice for a holiday name, especially if you want something that sounds classic, but entertains the holiday spirit. Check back tomorrow for our next Christmas name!
