25 Days of Christmas: North

Today's Christmas Baby Name is truly unisex- I'm talking about North. North is a word name that means "the direction North." While I prefer it for a girl, North is more on trend with the boys. It has a tough girl/boy vibe, and goes along well with names like Arrow or Fawn.

North is very up-and-coming. It is a pretty new name, inspired by its trendy brothers Weston and Easton. There are no famous Norths yet, but we'll probably see a celebrity use this one in the next few years.

North is an unusual appellation that conjures up pictures of snow and ice, perfect for a winter or holiday baby. North makes my own list (for girls, not boys) and I would love to see somebody use it. It's a great name that is suitable for either gender.

25 Days of Christmas: Bell

Bell is our Christmas Name of the Day. She is a cousin of  Belle and Bella, however her origins are much different. Bell originated as a surname and occupational name, she means "ringer of the bell." She reached her height in 1884, at 275. She completely dropped off the charts in the year 1915. Some would say that Bell looks incomplete, but others will like her simplicity and rather musical ere.

There are no famous Bells, however you may recognize the name from Galt Niederhoffer's book, A Taxonomy of Barnacles. Bell Barnacle is the name of the eldest daughter in the book. (Rumor has is that Maggie Gyllanhaal will be playing Bell in the movie adaptation.)

Bell would make a lovely name for a daughter born around the Holidays. She reminds us of Christmas Caroling and the sounds of Christmastime (plus "Silver Bells" would make a cute lullaby.)

25 Days of Christmas: Joy

Today's Christmas Name is one that is thought of a lot when asked about holiday names- Joy.
Joy means exactly what she sounds like. She is one of the original "word names." Joy peaked in popularity during the year 1974, when she reached #109. In recent years, Joy has been on a solid decline, however she climbed almost twenty spots in 2011.

Some famous Joys include Joy Fawcett, a soccer player, Joy Harjo, a poet, and Joy-Anna Duggar, one of the Duggar family's nineteen children.

Joy would make a great Christmastime baby name. Though she is mostly used for girls, it is not unheard of to use Joy or Joi for a baby boy. She's short and sweet, has no potential nicknames, and a lovely message. Joy is absolutely darling.

25 Days of Christmas: Pax

Number four in our 25 Days of Christmas series is our first boy name- Pax. Pax is Latin and means peaceful. Even though he is not currently ranked, he is in vogue because he ends in X. Pax is the perfect choice for a winter holiday baby. The meaning relating to peace incorporates the meaning of the holiday season.

Pax would make a logical alternative to Max, if you were looking for something less common. He could be should for Paxton, a surname name that has a more polished quality.

The most famous Pax would be Pax Jolie-Pitt, Brangelina's adopted son.

Pax is an all-around great name. If you are looking for something short, easy to remember, and holiday related, Pax makes a great choice

25 Days of Christmas: Plum

Our Christmas pick of the day is Plum. We all know the story The Night Before Christmas. Remember that line "and visions of sugar plums danced in their heads?" That's where this lovely lady comes from.

Plum is not ranked as a given name; she has just started to get attention pretty recently. The most common way to get to Plum would be via Victoria. Victoria Plums are an English breed of the fruit, and Victoria Plum is also the name of a fairy in a children's book. Plum could also work as a nickname for Peplum (if you are adventurous). More about that in this post.

Real life Plums include Mom blogger Bleubird's daughter Milla Plum, whom she calls by her middle.

Plum would make a daring choice for a Christmas baby, and is perfect if you want a subtle connection to the holiday.

25 Days of Christmas: Holly

Time for the second name in our 25 Days of Christmas series- Holly. Holly is ranked at #426, slowly decreasing in popularity. She is most often considered a nature name; holly is a plant species with red berries.

Holly peaked in the year 1984, coming in at #53. Even though she is no where near that number now, she still remains a popular pick around Christmas time.

While Holly herself does not have a easy nickname, she could be the nickname for many other names including Holiday/Holliday, Holloway, Hollis, Holland, Hollister, and Hollyn.

Even if Holly seems like a dated choice to you, she would still make a lovely, unpopular appelation for a daughter born around Christmas.

25 Days of Christmas: Natalya

Happy Holidays everyone! This year on S My Name is Sophie, I am going to profile 25 different Christmas names in the days leading up to the holiday. Let's start with Natalya.

Natalya means "born on Christmas Day." She has Russian origin, and currently stands at #828. Natalya (or her relatives Natalie and Natasha) would make a great name for a holiday baby, not just because of her meaning. She sounds very fresh and current; it would be an unexpected choice though.

Natalya could go by a couple different nicknames, including Nattie (the nickname of professional wrestler Natalya Neidhart), Lia/Lya, Tally, or Nat.

Check back tomorrow for the next Christmas name!
